Hernando Ruiz Ocampo was a leading radical modernist artist in the Philippines.He was a member of the Saturday Group of artists (also known as the Taza de Oro Group), and was one of the pre-war Thirteen Moderns, a group of modernist artists founded by Victorio C. Edades in 1938. These classes didn’t to hold his attention, though, and he was soon spending all of his time and energy on writing short stories and poetry instead. In the 1950’s, Ocampo’s visual art career really kicked off; completely self-taught, he created striking pieces that moored the sentiments often found in his writing, poetic tributes to his homeland’s flora and fauna, and stark and unweilding social statements whose messages could not be ignored.
